International Workshop on Explainable Artificial Intelligence in Göttingen

The CDSS group of the Department of Medical Informatics organized an Enlight Workshop in collaboration with partners from the University of the Basque Country and the University of Bordeaux

From the 17th to the 21st of July 2023, the CDSS (Clinical Decision Support System) group at the Department of Medical Informatics, in collaboration with partners from the University of the Basque Country and the University of Bordeaux, organized the first Enlight Workshop Beyond Explainable Artificial Intelligence (Beyond XAI).

Students from four different European universities from the Enlight network, the University of the Basque Country, the University of Bordeaux, the University of Galway, and the Georg-August University, participated actively in the lectures, discussions and exercises throughout the workshop. The lectures covered a broad range of topics from machine learning fundamentals including computer vision approaches, explainability in CDSS and computer vision, all the way to the AI Act and CDSS related regulations of the Medical Device Regulation.

Local and international experts in the field were invited to provide engaging talks: Prof. Dr. Anne-Christin, Hauschild, Stefan Rühlicke, and Dr. Zully Ritter from the Medical Informatics Institute, Prof. Dr. Itziar Alkorta and Prof. Dr. Borja Calvo-Molinos (University of the Basque Country), as well as Prof. Dr. Jenny Benois-Pineau and Prof. Dr. Romain Bourqui (University of Bordeaux).

This workshop served l to engage students and early carrier researchers in the area of AI and Medicine but also to initiate cooperation between the participating universities. The workshop was an academic and networking success; therefore, Beyond XAI 2024 will be hosted in Spain at the University of the Basque Country.

The event was funded by the European university Network to promote equitable quality of Life, sustaInability and Global engagement through Higher education Transformation (ENLIGHT) network. ENLIGHT is an alliance of ten comprehensive, research-intensive universities from ten European countries (Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland). Their mission is to empower students as globally engaged citizens with state-of-the-art knowledge, skills, and innovation potential to tackle major societal transitions and to promote equitable quality of life and sustainability (https://enlight-eu.org/).
