Speaker: Jun.-Prof. Dr. Jan Christoph (Institut für Medizininformatik, Biometrie und Epidemiologie Lehrstuhl für Medizinische Informatik, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg)

Topic: "From Knowledge to Action - IT support for the Molecular Tumor Board - born in MIRACUM, variously arrived.“

Abstract:

The colloquium talk will provide an overview of the MIRACUM consortium's use case "From Knowledge to Action - Support for Molecular Tumor Boards" from its beginnings to its current state.

This includes the original motivation why IT plays a special role for the Molecular Tumor Board, the elaboration of the core content of the five-year project (2018-2022) - among others through the exchange with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) as well as several German university hospitals in the run-up - as well as the ultimately resulting process, which is now supported by mainly two IT components:

a) the MIRACUM pipe as a bioinformatics pipeline in a Galaxy as well as R/Bash version, which processes the raw sequencing data to the point where they can be used for further decision-making in the Molecular Tumor Board in the first place.

b) cBioPortal as a platform for visualization of MIRACUM pipe results as well as integration of clinical and molecular biology data, which can be used for both care (to prepare a therapy recommendation) and research (to explore larger groups / studies).

The presentation will address the following:

- the associated stakeholder analysis as well as the resulting requirements for the two above-mentioned components

- the generic architecture as well as the planned and currently implemented

- integration into the hospital information systems and DIZe at the participating university hospitals.

The conclusion:

  • the particular challenges and lessons learned, especially with regard to:
    • (In Vitro Diagnostic) Medical Device Regulation as well as licensing.
    • o Involvement of all stakeholders, especially oncologists and pathologists
    • Data quality and availability of clinical characteristics.
  • Outlook in terms of:
    • Perspective use beyond MIRACUM, especially at the BZKF (Bavarian Center for Cancer Research).
    • Continuation in the next funding period of the Medical Informatics Initiative 2023-2026 in the cross-consortium use case PM4Onco beginning May 2023.
