ENLIGHT Blended Intensive Program (BIP) on the topic of “AI and Law”

As part of the European ENLIGHT network, the Department of Medical Informatics was involved as co-organizer of an international teaching program on the topic of “AI and Law”.

The ENLIGHT Blended Intensive Program (BIP) on “AI and Law” concluded on 11 April 2025 in San Sebastián (Spain) at the University of the Basque Country.

The event was organized by Prof. Dr. Borja Calvo Molinos and Prof. Dr. Usue Mori, in close collaboration with the Institute of Medical Informatics at the University Medical Center Göttingen. The Institute was represented by Prof. Dr. Anne-Christin Hauschild, Dr. Zully Ritter and Shrushhti Trivedi. The Göttingen team was significantly involved in the content conception: both in the development of the digital learning materials for the preparatory online course in January 2025 and in the implementation and evaluation of the interactive formats during the attendance week in Spain from April 7 to 11.

This event on AI and law follows the initiative launched with the workshop “Beyond XAI” 2023 at the Institute of Computer Science. A BIP usually comprises six ETCs and is a program of the ENLIGHT network. ENLIGHT aims to teach, network and facilitate the discussion of ideas for future projects and exchange in various fields such as health, the environment or new technologies. Ten European universities, including the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, are part of the ENLIGHT network.

This year, 42 students from eight European universities took part in the “AI and Law” BIP.

The program was designed to allow students with a legal background to learn the basics of AI online, including definitions such as algorithms, machine learning and explainability and their implementation. Students with an AI background also learned the basics of AI-related law, such as data protection, user safety, the application of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and AI law. Together, they worked on customized use cases with a technical and a legal AI component during the attendance week. The solutions to the use cases were also presented and evaluated. The “AI and Law” program aimed to inspire the future generation of data scientists, ethics experts and lawyers and guide them towards a responsible approach to AI and its applications!"
