Study programmes

Department of Medical Informatics

Below you will find information about the individual courses of study in which our institute teaches medical informatics.

On these pages you will find information on the individual courses of study in which our institute teaches Medical Informatics. An overview of all courses can be found in the online course catalogue of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen (UniVZ). Usually we offer our study modules in an annual cycle, so that there is a regular offer of courses in each summer or winter semester.

Detailed information on current teaching activities and teaching materials for the participants of our courses are available in the campus and learning management system Stud.IP.

Since we cannot cover all fields of study ourselves, we cooperate closely with the respective faculties. Therefore, you will not apply for a study place directly at our institute, but at the respective supporting faculty. However, we will be happy to provide you with advice on orientation at any time.

Further information

Applied Informatics

Medical Informatics is a founding subject of the study course Applied Informatics. Since WiSe 2000/2001 we have been training Bachelor and Master students in Göttingen. Applied Computer Science is our core curriculum from which the participation in further study programmes has developed.

Applied Data Science

The study programme is specifically dedicated to the question of data processing in medicine and has a high degree of overlap with applied computer science. A master's degree in Applied Data Science is being planned. However, graduates can also attend another technical-informatics Master's programme as a postgraduate course.

Medical Engineering

A good basic knowledge of medical informatics is a prerequisite for developing medical technology in such a way that it can be used reliably in the IT landscapes of the healthcare system and is economically successful.

Human Medicine

In accordance with the Medical Licensing Regulations and the National Competence-Based Learning Objectives Catalogue for Medicine (NKLM), we train future doctors in various modules of the clinical study phase of human medicine in Göttingen.

Medical Informatics as a major field of study

Bachelor

Admitted Bachelor students choose a major field of study after completing their first semester. If you are considering to start a Bachelor's programme in Applied Computer Science in Göttingen and choose the major in Medical Informatics, we are of course available to advise you regardless of the admission procedure. Please contact us by e-mail for an initial consultation.

Master

Even if you already hold a Bachelor's degree and would now like to start a Master's programme in Göttingen, the respective Faculty is responsible for the admission procedure (see above). In the Master's programme, you can also choose one of the various specialisations. In the specialisation Medical Informatics, we expect you to have previous knowledge of the subject; you must have a basic level of knowledge in order to be able to deal with the specialised questions of the Master's programme.

If you have good previous knowledge of computer science but no knowledge of Medical Informatics, we will develop a personal study plan with you based on your previous knowledge. In this way you can acquire missing basics parallel to your studies.

General Notes

The course is a full-time study. The language of instruction in the Bachelor's programme is German, whereas in the Master's programme it is English.

The university offers a wide range of information to prospective students, please make use of it.

Interdepartmental key competence modules

In addition to these programmes, the Department of Medical Informatics also offers inter-faculty key competence modules, which are basically open to all students in Göttingen. In this context, there is a close cooperation with the Master's Programme in Applied Statistics of the Faculty of Economic Sciences and the Bachelor's and Master's Programme in Molecular Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine.

The regularly offered key competence modules are:
  • Medical documentation
  • Data protection and data security
  • Basics of project management
  • Medical and administrative decision models
  • Knowledge Management
  • Personalized medicine

Further information can be found in the catalogue of key competence modules of the Georg-August-University.
