Introducing a new employee - Piyali Chandra

"I am very much looking forward to my journey and the important steps I will take in my academic career. I have been working as a research assistant in the Clinical Collaborative Research Unit since February 2025 and I am honored to be a part of it. This is the beginning of my doctoral studies, which I hope to start within the next six months. My work will focus on the development of deep learning models, with an emphasis on building a predictive model using ECG data.
I hold a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science from the West Bengal University of Technology, India, and a Master of Technology in Information Technology from Jadavpur University, India. After completing my master’s degree at Jadavpur University, I had the opportunity to work as a project intern for two years, allowing me to gain hands-on experience and further fuel my passion for research. Following this, I had the privilege of serving as an Assistant Professor at the University of Engineering and Management for three and a half years. During this time, I not only taught various courses but also collaborated with students and colleagues on several projects to create impactful solutions. My role extended to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, guiding them in their research projects, and helping them advance their careers by publishing papers in reputed journals and conferences.
Over the years, my research interests have evolved, focusing on augmented reality, image segmentation, predictive modeling with regression and classification techniques. These areas have strengthened my analytical and problem-solving skills, and I take pride in contributing as a co-author of multiple projects and papers. Alongside my research, I have always been passionate about teaching. The subjects I specialize in include Operating Systems, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Database Management, Software Engineering, Data Structures and Algorithms, Deep Learning. I have worked with various tools in both research and teaching, including Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, Excel, SQL and Unix which have been invaluable in my work and in mentoring students toward success.
I am grateful for the recognition I have received throughout my career. A recent example of this is from 2023, when I had the honor of being recognized for my contributions to teaching and mentorship at the University of Engineering and Management, a distinction I hold in high regard. Additionally, I have had the privilege of serving as a reviewer for numerous conferences, contributing to the academic community.
Beyond research and teaching, I have actively participated in organizing conferences, workshops, and educational competitions for students. These experiences have helped me enhance my leadership skills and reinforce my commitment to fostering an enriching academic environment. Being proficient in English, Hindi, and Bengali enables me to communicate effectively with diverse groups and engage in various academic and professional settings. Additionally, I have a keen interest in languages; I have explored Spanish out of curiosity and am currently dedicated to learning German to further expand my linguistic and cultural understanding."
