New Leadership in Biosignal Processing

At the beginning of the year, Dr. Philip Hempel officially assumed leadership of the Biosignal Processing research group at the Institute of Medical Informatics at the University Medical Center Göttingen. Having already established and shaped the group's focus over the past few months, this formal takeover marks an important step for its future direction.
The research focuses on developing modern methods for analyzing physiological signals, particularly in the cardiovascular field. The goal is to establish robust and interpretable AI approaches that support clinical decision-making and enable early risk assessment. Current work was presented at events including the ESC Heart Failure Research Summit in Berlin.
This was complemented by scientific exchange, for example, through a presentation at TU Darmstadt, at ENIM 2026 in Dortmund on the evidence-based development of AI in medicine, and through support of the IEEE EMBS Start-up Pitch Challenge in Davos. For the coming months, the focus will be on expanding existing collaborations and further developing data-driven approaches with a clear clinical relevance.
The working group is consistently pursuing the goal of translating methodological innovations in biosignal processing into concrete applications for patient care. Furthermore, the group's work will be presented by Dr. Philip Hempel on April 10, 2026, at the 92nd Annual Meeting of the German Cardiac Society (DGK) in Mannheim, as part of the eCardiology panel.
